  It works in English as well.  Pig, slob, grub, et al, are used as insults of  
  the same sort.  I'm aware of the French also using their word for 'pig' as  
  an  
  insult.  That meaning wasn't apparent in the use in Alexander's prose.  I  
  simply thought that the guy was plain ugly.
