  They never really stopped.  
    
  For thousands of years, tribalism was a protection strategy.  "You don't  
  look  
  like someone from our tribe, so I'm not going to trust you."  
    
  Over the years, much of that got suppressed - except for the hillbilly

  Today, the divide is between the people who believe that they should be our  
  rulers and everyone else.
