When I was around 20 years old I went to a tec museum and they had a
generator there that had a handle on that you could wind to turn the genny.

Connected up was a switch that you could choose the power you generated to
go either to a light bulb (around 40 watts I would guess), or a about a 10
   inch electric fan.

Winding the generator as hard and as fast as I could you could get the light
to light up but not to full brilliance. If you switched it to the fan you
had great trouble to generate enough power to get it to turn. I did manage
to get the fan to turn quite slowly.

So you need a great deal of energy to produce hardly any electricity.
