The modified square wave inverter output will be fine. The problem
here centers around the batteries. Like trying to use a firecracker
   to bust up a boulder.

To run a 4000 watt load at 24 volts (don't even think about 12 volts),
your battery system must supply 167 amps and do so with sufficiently
low internal impedance that there is little voltage sag.

Starting that compressor might require as much as 4X running load so
   plan accordingly.

You'll want several sets of 12 volt deep cycle batteries connected in
series and the sets connected in parallel. I recommend deep discharge
AGM batteries by a major name brand such as Sorensen. If you don't
have the $$$ then wet batteries from a reputable company such as
Trojan will do but won't last nearly as long.

If a compressor cycle lasts 5 minutes then 333 watt-hours have been
consumed. Your solar system must replenish that much energy (plus
losses) before the next compressor cycle. A very hefty and expensive
   proposition.

If you are working where either electric power isn't available or it
isn't available in sufficient quantity to run the compressor, you'll
be vastly better off using a conventional engine-powered compressor.
