lol, that's true, too, re paranoia . Guess that's why I've
always been attracted to the Amish lifestyle all these decades even
though the religion angle kind of always frightened me a little.
Well, I don't trust government at all anymore, either, and the
religious aspect just isn't a problem anymore, too. God-fearing
people who are good and righteous just aren't going to be the ones out
there creating problems, they'll be more into the defending and
keeping the faith. But those paranoids, yikes!

   --------------------

I'm on the NH edge of the eastern Mass metro area and my social circle
extended into Boston and Worcester, plus I lived for a year near NYC. I was
surprised how so many urbanites, especially the females, perceived every
metal tool as a weapon that might be used against them. It's easy to see why
they fear guns when they also fear hammers and screwdrivers.

A former Shaker colony here has become a museum that displays the clever
means by which they were self-supporting. I showed up there once in black
leather on a motorcycle which provoked the expected reaction, until they
realized I wasn't what they had assumed, then they tripped over themselves
to be nice and show me everything. Being an amateur historian of technology
I knew how to make and use their old tools.

Other people I knew in that rural area lived very independent and
self-reliant lifestyles without going to the doctrinaire extremes of a
religious or socialist cult. I practice some of their more productive habits
although I definitely prefer being on town water and sewer. Folks here can
pretty much live as they please unless plagued by neighbors concerned with
   property values.
