   SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The city of San Diego will increase spending   
   fivefold on utility undergrounding projects, going from about $50 million   
   a year to nearly $250 million a year to bury utility lines underground   
   across the city.   
      
   Already three neighborhoods are in the works: Ridgeview-Webster in   
   District Four, Golden Hill in District Three and Mount Hope in District   
   Nine.   
      
   The surge follows a major delay since the pandemic and new contract   
   negotiations with San Diego Gas & Electric, which funds the undergrounding   
   in a partnership with the city.   
      
   Right now, residents in San Diego pay a sur charge of three and half   
   percent on their SDG&E bill. However, the debt has ballooned by hundreds   
   of millions of dollars, so they are moving quickly to try and shrink that   
   number by increasing the number of projects designed, approved and   
   completed each year.   
      
   Beyond the unsightly look of “above ground” utility lines, they can also   
   be a fire hazard, especially in urban areas like canyons.   
      
   While putting the lines underground does raise property values, the work   
   comes with a hefty price tag of about $8 million per mile.   
      
   According to the city, there are about a thousand miles left to go.
