As the voltage raises, so do capacitive losses, which       are very big in say, 400kV. Medium voltage cables are nothing to worry       about, so are low voltage ones. In Athens and in Thesalloniki there are       buried 150 kV cables and 150/20 kV substations within the cities. The       400/150 kV substations are in rural areas, of course. The main problem       are the complaints of the people that the overhead line will go through       their properties-the "not in my back yard"problem. Here, the underwater       HVDC line, that will connect Crete with the mainland is ready, they are       already building the converter station (aka valve hall), they have       brought the VERY heavy transformers, only the people that the HV       tranmsission line is going to pass through their areas say no, no,no. A       very expensive project that is going to shut down the rust buckets of       Linoperamata and Xylokamara, that use 300,000 tons of heavy fuel each       year (which is also VERY expensive) and will save up to 100,000,000       euros each year in utility costs, is being delayed because some people       are stubborn! They say that the line should go underwater, should be       buried. But 150 (or even 400)kV cables are special order, they are not       "off-the-shelf" like MV and LV cables. Increased installation costs, but       worse capacitive losses which will defeat the purpose of using HVDC for       the underwater cable, if they're going to use HVAC for another cable.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
