As it turns out, my wife and I just bought a new sleeping bag last
weekend. The old one became too tattered, after being dragged through
   too many winters.

Rather than a list, I have dropped to the essentials:

   Warmth. Water. Food.

   Add to that the luxuries:

   Light. Communication. Toilet paper.

All the kits have a sleeping bag, space blanket, emergency ponchos,
stocking cap, socks, gloves, collapsible bow saw, fire starters, WWI
metal canteen and mess cup, halogen water purifying tablets, candles, a
flashlight, and several packs of peanuts.

We also never leave without a cell phone. When we head into the
mountains we add a CB radio and GMRS handsets, plus at least two days
worth of food and additional gear.

The west coast is not the only place that the weather can kill you. A
good sleeping bag made a big difference once when I broke down during a
Nebraska blizzard. I stayed comfortably warm until dawn, at 40 below.
