   Well, as events showed, his BIG mistake was leaving his car.   
      
   At worse, he should have only left the car long enough to increase the   
   "footprint" so that potential rescue parties could find him sooner.   
      
   With little risk to health they could have stayed in the car for up to 30   
   days.   With 2 adults and 2 kids who could warm each other they had little   
   risk from the cold.   A BIG blanket, of course, would have been a bonus.   
      
   Were I to want to be prepared to travel in that part of the world, my "keys"   
   to survival would be:  1)  LARGE blanket;  2) WATER;  3) signal mirror.   
      
   The signal mirror would help alert any aircraft (including commercial jets)   
   that there is something going on.   
      
   It would have taken a high degree of what used to be called "moral courage"   
   to simply sit tight rather than leave his family behind to go for "help."   
   But, like it or not, sometimes the best thing to do is NOTHING.
