   SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Former New York City mayor and one-time GOP   
   presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani is endorsing Meg Whitman's bid for the   
   gubernatorial nomination in California.   
      
   In a statement released Wednesday by Whitman's campaign, Giuliani says he   
   believes the former eBay chief executive could help re-energize the   
   Republican party's grassroots.   
      
   Giuliani took a beating in his quest for the presidential nomination last   
   year, dropping out in January after losing the Florida primary, but he   
   remains popular with conservatives and is a strong fundraiser.   
      
   The 2008 presidential campaign was Whitman's first foray into politics. She   
   was an economic adviser to candidate Mitt Romney and later to GOP nominee   
   John McCain.
