   There seems to be a perception among potheads that liberals support   
   marijuana legalization, but nothing could be further from the truth.   
      
   Socialists are very intolerant of recreational drug and alcohol use,   
   and in fact formed part of the Christian-led Temperance [Prohibition]   
   movement of the late-19th and early-20th centuries   
      
   The Soviet Union certainly did not tolerate marijuana, and barely   
   tolerated alcohol only because it was so entrenched in Russian   
   culture, and even then they rationed it in an attempt to control   
   people's drinking habits.   
      
   The major difference between conservatives and liberals is their   
   philosophy on how to deal with recreational drug users.  Conservatives   
   treat drug use as a criminal offense, punishing users by locking them   
   up in prison to teach them a lesson.   Liberals see drug users as   
   suffering from some sort of 'sickness,' and prefer to 'treat' them by   
   locking them up in psychiatric hospitals instead.  Calling a cage by a   
   different name makes it more 'progressive.'   
      
   The socialist left is pushing for universal health care, which will   
   give the government the right to control people's diet and exercise   
   habits to control costs.  Similar control will be exercised over   
   alcohol and tobacco use, and certainly recreational drugs like   
   marijuana.   
      
   There is no way in hell the Obama administration will allow California   
   to legalize marijuana, and a DEA crackdown will follow any attempt to   
   do so.  Socialist liberals will also reject California's attempt to   
   legalize pot because it implies states' rights, which the left has   
   long equated with slavery.  Leftist orthodoxy teaches that the 10th   
   Amendment is invalid, so California will not be permitted to ignore   
   the unconstitutional federal drug laws.
