   This is exactly what our Founding Fathers were trying to prevent.   
      
   They believed that the downfall of the Roman Republic was due to   
   "bread and circuses", and likewise that of the Athenian Republic   
   was to raiding the public treasury for boons.  Now, at least a   
   large proportion of Americans would accept serfdom over freedom.
