I wouldn't feel secure betting on Franken's success. I posted this on
Lampson's usenet thread alphabetically "above", so I repeat:

I want him to succeed. But you may get your wish.

I was surprised at how flat the first show was. With the guest list, it
should have carried itself but I thought it was clear they didn't make
much of an investment in running practice shows.

Al needs to show some passion. In that respect, the second show went a
lot better. They had the Imus statement that Franken didn't care about
the contractors who were desecrated. Having done several USO shows, that
got him going. But does he understand that he has to keep it up when it
   isn't personal?

It seemed like they had more entertainment breaks in the second show, so
they may appreciate that it must be entertainment to fly.

What really scares me is his cohost Kathryn Lampher. I've made a point of
hating her for _years_ since she personifies the conservative stereotype
of the sort of pretentious yuppie bitch who would host public radio. For
   sick fun each show, count:

   1) the number of times she mentions that she was a _real_ journalist.

   2) the number of times she tells a caller to quit blathering and state his
point. Insecure control freak perhaps but she has precious little ability
to joke with callers, to empathize and build community. If you had $100
for every time in public radio she told a caller to "get to the point and
ask the expert guest your question" (Basically, "Your opinion doesn't
count. The opinion of our expert guest counts."), your retirement would
be very secure. I don't know. She needs a practical course in counseling
technique, conversational skills or something. "Shut up and move along"
is the one club she has in her bag. That isn't going to build a community
for O'Franken. I would be really interested in how she got her seat next
   to him.
