I don't think the Republicans WANT to starve kids or put old people out on
the street. They just don't give a damn if that's what their policies end up
doing. I used to be a Republican. I listened to Rush Limbaugh, he made sense
to me, and I considered myself a conservative Republican. The reason was
largely because like most "Conservatives" (Most of the people who call
themselves that are really just Statists and control freaks who detest
Original Intent every bit as much as of the liberals they love to bash-but I
digress) Rush said a lot of things that sounded like they ought to have
been true. He made the world make sense to me, which can be damn....I guess
the word is "Seductive." No matter what happened, Rush had a snap
explanation for it that was easy to understand while eating lunch and only
half paying attention and could probably fit on a bumper sticker. So how
could he be wrong? Sept. 11th? "Those people hate us because they're jealous
of us." Wwwweeeeelllllll, not quite....(Rush didn't quite get around to
mentioning Bush version 1.0 regeging on a promise to pull US forces out of
Saudi Arabia which is what set bin Laden off)

Anyway, by degrees I slowly realized that the world is nowhere near as
simple as conservatives would have us believe. It would be great if every
problem could be solved with either a tax cut or a smart bomb. I wish the
world was like that and maybe that will to believe is what makes Rush, Fox
News etc. so popular. Maybe the entire conservative movement is some sort of
a collective prayer or the expression of a desire to return to a world that
simply doesn't exist anymore, assuming it ever really did.

Look at Iraq. It's been a complete disaster right from the start. At the
current rate, we'll have over 1000 dead Americans by the election with no
end in sight, no WMD, 180 billion dollars "invested" (so far), no way we can
pull out without another Saddam coming to power, a demoralized military and
not a lot of happy news from "The front line in the war on terrorism" unless
you're Halliburton or Bechtel. Nonetheless, the prayer continues for the
conservatives that this will somehow turn out to have been a good idea.
Garofalo, Sarandon, Sheen etc. thought it was a bad idea to invade Iraq, but
they were all a bunch of dumb Hollywood leftists. The UN inspectors couldn't
find WMD but they were just a bunch of dumb "Inspector Cluseaus." The UN was
made up of people so stupid we apparently thought we had to start spying on
them. The French, many Brits and the Germans didn't support us because they
were just another coalition of dumb socialist bastards. Everybody was wrong,
except the John Birch wing of the Republican party, and they managed to get
most of the country on board with them with lots of help from the "liberal
media." Now we are stuck in another Vietnam and nobody even cares. Least of
all Dubya. He's busy in Arkansas today trying to get re-elected and hoping
to Christ nobody will notice that he's been a total failure.

If Iraq hasn't been a disaster, I shudder to imagine what would qualify as
   one to these people.

CNN in the other room is saying Bush and Kerry are tied in the polls,
showing that the prayer is largely continuing.

End of speech. I now return you to your regular newsgroup.
