   Boycotting Oil and Gas Is Harder Than It Looks

   Regarding your editorial “‘Just Stop Oil’ Won’t Stop Its Vandalism”   
   (July 6)    
   on the protests at Wimbledon: The Daily Telegraph newspaper ran a photo of    
   one protester throwing jigsaw puzzle pieces onto the tennis court while    
   wearing a PVC rain jacket. She seemed unaware that polyvinyl chloride is a    
   derivative of oil and gas production, made from ethylene, a component of    
   natural gas. That rain jacket wasn’t made from unicorn ear wax, but the    
   irony seems to have escaped the self-righteous protester. To be true to her    
   cause, she should, logically, ditch the PVC jacket and let the English rain    
   soak her to the skin.   
      
   That PVC rain jacket is only one of some 6,000 byproducts made from the    
   compounds furnished by oil and gas production. If Just Stop Oil succeeds,    
   I suppose we will have to drive on dirt roads, make our credit cards out    
   of oak chips, insulate the wires in our electronics with shellac and make    
   our blood bags out of wax paper.
