They did go from cheap litte items, aka junk, to better quality, more
expensive items, but I don't know details about that.

One thing I do know about is that Congress put a quota on the number of
cars which could be imported, so Japan, which had so far only exported
to the US cheap cars, intead of making say 100,000 cheap cars they
started to make 100,000 middle and expensive cars instead, to get
maxiumum profit within the allowed quota. So US car companies that had
with regard to Asia a monopoly on expensive cars, no longer had one.

I suppose eventually*** Japan would have been selling expensive cars
here, but I'm pretty sure this speeded things up by 5 or 10 years or
more. ***(Well, maybe. Maybe they only made cheap cars
for their own market and sold the same cars here? And didn't make any
expensive cars until that quota was imposed? That's another thing I
   don't know.)

I can't imagine that Congress intended this. I don't think they foresaw
it. Even though it's obvious after the fact. Someone must have talked
about this by now in a book or interview, but I havn't seen more than
the original article that I basically just quoted above.
