Not all of them. You are giving the drugs too much power in
   your remark.

Some few work for a living and get off the opiates.
Some get off the drugs and go to work. I see interviews with
people who sobered up and went back to work on San Francisco TV news.

Before maintenance therapy was outlawed most went to work
and earned good livings and that was in 1916 the year my mom was
born. After the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1916 doctors were no
longer permitted to give maintenance therapy to outpatients
and the Junkie was born out of another bad law based on the best of
intentions. Next up was alcohol prohibition which was a spectacular
failure while enriching criminal entrepreneurs. Bad Law and good
intentions seem to march in lockstep.
Cultures are quite often drug cultures and in the late 19th
Century Alcohol was breaking families but there was no effective
therapy and no understanding of how addiction worked.
International culture was sustained by Vin Mariana which
was an extract of coca in wine and was endorsed by Presidents,
Popes and Kings. Yes it had cocaine in it. Not so much as a
modern coke head would like but enough to pep up aging politicians
   and Popes.
