   “Morning Joe” co-hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough painstakingly   
   read out New York Times opinion columnist Maureen Dowd’s entire   
   editorial on how “identity politics” killed the Democratic 2024 election   
   bid.   
      
   Dowd’s piece, “Democrats and the Case of Mistaken Identity Politics,”   
   was published in Saturday’s edition but was read in full on Monday’s   
   “Morning Joe” show in a segment that lasted almost 10 minutes.   
      
   In her column, Dowd slammed the Democratic Party’s laser focus on   
   wokism, which is shorthand for “identity politics,” arguing it alienated   
   key voter groups and contributed to recent election losses, including   
   former President Donald Trump’s landslide victory over Vice President   
   Kamala Harris.   
      
   “The party embraced a worldview of hyper-political correctness,   
   condescension and cancellation, and it supported diversity statements   
   for job applicants and faculty lounge terminology like ‘Latinx,’ and   
   ‘BIPOC’ (Black, Indigenous, People of Color),” Dowd wrote.   
      
   “This alienated half the country, or more. And the chaos and   
   antisemitism at many college campuses certainly didn’t help,” she added.   
      
   While Trump attracted a diverse coalition, Dowd explained that   
   Democrats’ perceived elitism, political correctness, and identity-   
   focused language drove many away.   
      
   The columnist argued that working-class and moderate voters felt   
   neglected by the party’s progressive agenda and campus-style activism,   
   adding that Trump “played to the irritation of many Americans disgusted   
   at being regarded as insensitive for talking the way they’d always   
   talked.”   
      
   Dowd said the left needs to rethink its approach, citing outspoken   
   Democratic strategist James Carville. She wrote that he said the party   
   had “become enamored of ‘identitarianism’ — a word he uses because he   
   won’t say ‘woke’ — radiating the repellent idea that ‘identity is more   
   important than humanity.'”   
      
   The writer noted that the party should instead focus on reconnecting   
   with rural and working-class Americans to regain their traditional base.   
      
   Brzezinski, who kicked off the reading of the piece, said:   
      
   “I think a lot of people have already been talking about this. We have a   
   lot of calls about this piece. It’s an interesting message for Democrats   
   … It really crystallized how some Democrats are waking up and realizing   
   that woke is broke.”   
      
   As Brzezinski began to read, clips flashed on the screen, illustrating   
   Dowd’s words, such as a clip of Trump on the campaign trail lamenting   
   not being able to call women “beautiful” and another clip of a CNN   
   contributor criticizing the “trashing” of campuses in political   
   protests.

   Dowd’s piece also addressed the abortion issue as well as the hot-button   
   topic of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports, and how it   
   divided voters.   
      
   “Democrats learned the hard way in this election that mothers care both   
   about abortion rights and having their daughters compete fairly and   
   safely on the playing field,” the columnist wrote.   
      
   The MSNBC morning show flashed a graphic of the quote, hammering home   
   Dowd’s point.

   Scarborough took over the reading of the second half of Dowd’s column,   
   which cited a chart from the Financial Times that revealed that white   
   progressives “hold views far to the left of the minorities they   
   champion.”   
      
   When he finished reading the piece, Scarborough said: “We could talk   
   about this for four hours. I’m looking at this, and it’s stuff we’ve   
   talked about on this show about.”
