Confident proclamations about economic history from someone who's never
   studied it are amusing.

Pre-enclosure farming with roataion under the three-field system, where
land was held in common by the whole village, was not inefficient. It
provided for farmers' needs as well as a decent surplus. Enclosure
promoted monocultures which promoted crop failures. So much for bare
   shelves.
