The seventh person to die in the Highland Park parade mass
shooting was a grandfather of 16 who was injured alongside two
other family members — including his wife of 50 years.

Eduardo Uvaldo, 69, had spent a day on life support after being
shot in the back of the head, with his family begging for
prayers. His wife and one of his 16 grandkids were also injured,
   an online fundraiser said.

He died in an Evanston hospital at 8 a.m. Wednesday, nearly 24
hours after the mass shooting in his Illinois hometown, his
   family confirmed.

“Thank you to everyone who prayed for my dad and my family. This
morning he passed,” one of his daughters, Tanya Uvaldo Castro,
   confirmed in a Facebook post.

“We are heartbroken but are at peace because we know he wouldn’t
want to be here in the state that he was. He passed peacefully.”

She later shared photos showing the devoted granddad at previous
Fourth of July parades in the Chicago suburb, saying that he
   “loved” them.

“These photos here show that we always attended the parade,” she
said, saying they “got there early” this year to make sure they
   didn’t miss any of it.

“I don’t know how we are going to do it without you,” the
   grieving daughter said.

A granddaughter, Nivia Guzman, called him “a kind, loving, and
funny man who did not deserve this” in a fundraiser that has
collected more than $80,000 by Thursday.

Uvaldo’s wife of 50 years, Maria, was also struck with bullet
fragments in the head, family friend Jackie Tapia told the
   Chicago Sun-Times.

The widow “is devastated at the moment, and there is nothing
that can calm her down,” Tapia said. “As for her injuries,
they’re minor, so she should recover. She’s just overwhelmed
   now.”

She said the family — which the Chicago Tribune said included 16
grandkids — started running as soon as they heard gunshots.

“The son-in-law saw [Uvaldo] and tried to protect him, shielding
him with his body, but he had already been hit,” Tapia said.

The grandson who was struck has since been discharged from a
   hospital, along with his grandmother.

Some of the dozens wounded Monday remained hospitalized in
critical condition and the death toll could still rise, police
   have warned.

Gunman Robert Crimo III, 21, has since confessed to the
shooting, police said. He has been charged with seven counts of
first-degree murder, and prosecutors said there will be “many,
   many more charges coming.”
