   A respectable town in the west of England is suffering from an   
   infestation of pop-up brothels run by Eastern European crime gangs,   
   according to police.   
      
   Swindon, in the county of Wiltshire, has become a magnet for the gangs, who   
   set up the ‘sex dens’ in short-term rental accommodation.   
      
   Police believe about 180 sex workers have been installed in at least 30   
   properties in the town, which has a population of 200,000.   
      
   The gangs lease apartments and houses for anything between one day and a few   
   weeks to avoid detection by officers.   
      
   The call girls – many of whom have apparently been trafficked from Poland   
   and Romania – are also frequently moved between addresses.   
       
   Detective Sergeant Chris Hitchcock of Wiltshire Police said: “Officers look   
   to intervene and see if we can offer safeguarding as often as we can. Not   
   every girl we come across has been trafficked but they are largely vulnerable.   
   The girls are often    
   subject to assault.”   
      
   Last year it was reported that the English seaside town of Newquay, in   
   Cornwall, was experiencing an identical problem.   
      
   In England and Wales, buying and selling sex are not illegal but associated   
   activities such as soliciting, kerb crawling and brothel-keeping are outlawed.
