   Sir Gerald Kaufman,born June 21st 1930,   
   the oldest and longest-serving member of the   
   British House of Commons,died February 26th 2016.   
   He had held a safe Labour seat in Manchester since 1970.   
      
   Kenneth Clarke,another of the survivors of the 1970 intake,   
   becomes Father of the House,but not oldest member (that may   
   be Dennis Skinner,lately turned 85).   
      
   Kaufman was of Jewish background but strongly critical of Israel.   
      
   Labour will presumably hold the seat in a by-election.
