   Part of the Middle East's problems can be traced back to the British and   
   French dividing it up after WW1 in a pretty arbitrary way that didn't   
   take into account different ethnic groups.   
      
   Iraq ended up with 3 different major ethnic groups. Saddam, awful though   
   he was, kept a lid on it all. Violence erupted after he was gone, much   
   as it did in Yugoslavia after Tito went.   
      
   Does anybody know whether the death toll was higher under Saddam than   
   after he went?
