I'm a Brit, but I lived in Texas for a few months in the 1980s, and I
can kind of understand both perspectives.

I don't want to see more guns (especially handguns) in the UK, but
   perhaps it's happening anyway.

In Texas, guns seemed to be everywhere. I read about shootings, in
the papers and was worried for a while. But eventually I realised
that it wasn't random chance: it actually seemed pretty safe providing
you didn't (a) get involved with drugs and gangs; or (b) mess around
   with someone's wife.

I wouldn't carry a gun myself, but I felt pretty safe when there were
a lot of people around me with guns. There have been school
shootings, but I've never heard of a shooting at a monster truck rally
or some other place where a large percentage of people are carrying.

The problem is when you get wolves with guns amongst the sheep
without. That scares me a lot more than being around a lot of people
with guns, because I'll be one of the sheep.
