A Florida man killed his estranged wife and tried to cover up
the crime by sending texts to family and friends, claiming the
missing woman had been diagnosed with coronavirus, police say.

David Anthony was being held without bail Tuesday at the Doña
Ana County Detention Center in New Mexico on second-degree
murder and kidnapping charges. He was arrested April 1 in
connection with the disappearance of his 54-year-old wife,
Gretchen Anthony, who still has not been found.

An investigation was launched last month, when an unidentified
witness said they received a “suspicious text” from the missing
woman. According to an arrest report obtained by CBS 12, the
message claimed Gretchen was being held by the Centers for
Disease Control in Jupiter following a diagnosis for COVID-19.

The witness noted that she received the text on March 23 and
that the last time she saw Gretchen was a few days prior.
Authorities believe her 43-year-old husband is the last person
known to have contact with her.

Officers searched her home and reached out to the Jupiter
facility but have so far been unable to find Gretchen. They
later found her vehicle abandoned with her purse still inside.

A second witness told officers they too received a text from
Gretchen, saying she was being taken by a CDC approved task
force in Belle Glade, where they “sedated her.” He said the
messages sounded more like Anthony and showed them other
   messages to support his claim.

Authorities noted there is no facility in Belle Glade.

“As the investigation progressed and further evidence collected,
it is believed David E. Anthony is responsible for her
disappearance and related homicide,” Jupiter police said in a
   statement posted to Facebook.

Police tracked him to Las Cruces after his phone pinged there
and took him into custody. He is currently awaiting extradition
   to Palm Beach County.
