    As indicated earlier, there is no need to predict solar flares in order to   
   have a record of record of measured solar output. And there is no need for   
   satellites either. All you need is a thermometer, a dark box, and a stop   
   watch.   
      
    Accurate measurements of solar output have been gathered for over 100   
   years now.

    Yup, essentially that's it. The box absorbs at all wavelengths up to   
   roughly the diameter of the apature and the temperature change gives the   
   total energy absorbed over the time of the measurement.   
      
    Total Solar output is then readily computed.
