Mike, many of the people believe in the system. It is misplaced faith,
but there it is. Most of these are good people. They are just sincerely
wrong. I am sure That it is because they have to be blind to the defects or
survive the system that exists themselves. But I am friends with some folks
that were fairly high placed in the government. They knew we didn't agree on
lots of things, we chose not to talk about it rather than destroy a personal
friendship. My wife's cousin's husband is a KGB trained state security
official and he even tried to engage me on my views. I told him that I did
not come to Cuba to argue politics with anyone especially inside the family.
I told him; "You and I have very different views, and I would rather have
your friendship than even try to win a political argument with you." He
accepted that. He also knew that while I was in Cuba, when anyone brought up
politics, I changed the subject. I am smart enough, Mike, to know better
than wear out my welcome. They know I have very strong opinions, but that I
leave them in Florida when I visit Cuba. Actually many of my opinions aren't
unfavorable to Cuba. Just when I confront an asshole like Christensen or
   Barry or Fred.

I think Cuba will evolve on its own calendar Mike. Much like China and
Viet Nam. The people in Cuba KNOW the present system is a cluster fukkk.
They'll fix it eventually. Better to keep our mouths shut and just quietly
place a tool here and there along the way to help them rather than try to
trip them up. Just be patient.
