   The Inquisition was politically motivated.   
      
   After centuries of tolerance in the Iberian peninsula, with Jews   
   Christians and Muslims living together in a fruitful multicultural   
   melange..  circumstances changed. Frederick and Isabella put pressure   
   on Jews to convert, or die.  It was these converted Jews, who did very   
   well as New Christians, who became the prime target of the Inquisiton.   
   Old Christians saw them prospering as a new middle class, and their   
   jealousy led to them denouncing the converts for continuing to practice   
   Jewish rituals in secret.   
      
   Thousands were tortured and killed.   
      
   But of course it's called the Spanish Inquisition, because this was   
   not typical, even at the time, and certainly not outside that time..

   insignificance (measured in THOUSANDS) compared to the later   
   Atheist holocausts which took over 40,000,000 MILLION victims.  8^o
