   maybe i can help, 'cause we use some FWAG114 without problems ... first of   
   all get the latest firmware from early this year (march or so).

   what do you mean with that? assuming you have a working internet   
   connection, what software/hardware (on both sides) do you use to establish   
   the vpn tunnel?   
      
   easiest is to use a netgear vpn-router on both sides or at least the   
   netgear vpn client ("prosafe client", which is softremote). but it works   
   with other devices too. we use to use it i.e. with netscreen and linksys   
   (linksys with problems, as they do not support manual network identifiers).

   did you read the routers manual and the (very good) netgear vpn manuals?
