Just the one that you compare apple and oranges.

VPN is the way you securely connect two systems (or devices) whereas
TS really is a service that runs on the server and runs _via_ a VPN
   tunnel (or not).

Basically TS just gives you the screen that you would see if you would
be sitting in front of the remote machine. But otherwise no data is
transferred (in the standard setups). The system which calls up the TS
Client session in fact does not have a network connection to the
Terminal server with the SMB protocol, i.e. you can't browse the
servers drives in your _local_ network neighborhood. Again only the
graphical content of the screen is transferred, which greatly reduces
   the total amount of traffic.

A Terminal Client is usually used _via_ a VPN tunnel.

That said, if you use a VPN Tunnel to open up a Terminal Session it
could be slower than opening up a Terminal Session directly via the
internet. That, however, implies security risks as you have to open
the system up to the net.

And if you use DSL to connect both nodes to the internet I can assure
you running a TS Client via VPN is _really_ fast.
