   	Here's something useless that won't make your day: for most of   
   its length, the Erie Canal was originally built to a depth of a mere   
   four feet.  It's claimed in quite a few sources that the suicidally   
   depressed would sometimes try jumping into the Canal with the intention   
   of drowning and come away disgusted that there was barely enough water   
   to get wet in it.
