   This depends very much on the country you are in. Here in Germany, books   
   may be copied (in total, i.e. beyond fair use) for personal use if they   
   have been out of print for a number of years, this rule exists to ensure   
   widest possible distribution of knowledge.   
      
   However, IIRC there are no similar rules for software (although,   
   arguably, there should be).
