If I need a sort for files of unlimited size (OK, less than 2G), I
would download RPSRT102.ZIP, a DOS(!) program by the late Robert Pirko
dating back to 1991. It comes with full source and I once tried it on
an 90MHz P1 NT box with 64Mb comparing it to M$ SORT. I eventually
zapped the latter after more than hour as it was just eating CPU
without actually producing anything. (RPSORT finished in 15 minutes or
   so)

Also, your plan to merge just two files at a time is rather silly as
others have already mentioned, the two high-performance commercial
offerings I've used a lot, SyncSort and DFSort can merge 32 files in a
   single pass...
