   the problem is your resolution. These functions where introduced in the   
   days graphic cards had not much memory (only 256 KB max.). So the   
   graphics card has to hold both pages in its ram. 640x480@4 Bit per pixel   
   (= 16 colors) is: 153600 Bytes, that's more than the half of the   
   graphics ram.   
      
   => the highest mode you can use with this technique is 640x350@4 Bit,   
   because that needs 112000 Bytes per page.
