   trouble reading records without $A-

I "get myself into a lot of trouble" reading old binary files saved
before we got word alignment. If I don't put {$A-} in my unit and read
these files of records, I see the data shifted a byte or two ahead in
the memory structure holding the record, and by the time the second
record of the file is read in, it is absolute garbage. There must be
something to the argument that the $A directive affects the reading of
   records.
