   I think you didn't understand what was already written here:   
      
   1. he gave you a working example of reading in a string char by char   
   2. you have only to add the call of the val function after the string is   
      read in to get your real/extended/double variable out of that string   
      
   Don't you like val anymore? Or where is the problem?
