Charles, Jim and John thanx for your suggestions.

On the XP machine all dos 16 bit support was gone.
I removed a spyware program called Winservad.exe. This is known to use
   illegal 16 bit instructions.
Apparently the file autoexec.nt was removed.
According to MS knowledge base 324767/nl, the cause is either
config.nt, autoexec.nt, command.com which all should be in the in the
   windows/system32 directory.

The notebook with Win ME has developed lots of other stability problems.
So not being able to show graphics might have other causes.
Any suggestions here are welcome, but it looks like I have to re-install
     an OS there.
