   GVFM's philosophy is to show the current state of the drive at all times. It   
   may not always do that, but that's what it will always try to acheive.

   As I said, that's not GVFM's philosophy. I have an old machine with up to 13   
   logical volumes attached or mapped to it, and GVFM is nearly always ready to   
   go before I am.

   "They" (the parent folder) has already been validated. What GVFM does when   
   the parent folder is expanded is to call DOS to find out what sub-folders it   
   has and what they're called.

   Expanding a subdirectory only requires a partial read of the drive's state   
   and is usually performed faster than the user can react to it. Even if it is   
   slow (eg when expanding a folder on an uncached floppy disk), GVFM has no   
   alternative but to wait for DOS/BIOS to do its thing.
