Also, lots of       older cards used PALs/GALs, programmed logic arrays, where you have to know       the code inside because you        can't easily read the contents. Guess, the 'original' redesigners of snark       barker or plained bib did all the research back then or were open to release       their designs, so a redesign was quite easy.
