I have a problem with putting money above artistic contributions. As you say
he's doing just fine now, he doesn't need the money. I don't see a problem
with doing it "for the fans".

Who cares if some corporate bozos make money off it? Is it "the principle of
it all" that concerns you? How about putting artistic considerations and fan
loyalty above concerns that someone is going to make money from one's
   charitable act.

And he does owe the fans, it was star trek that made him a household name.
If it weren't for star trek fans he would not be where he is today. As far
as I can see both he and you have a slight attitude problem.
