   	Actually, you don't get it.  Just because the "fans" made   
   Shatner what he is, doesn't mean that he should give away his services   
   -- this service being acting -- for free for "fans" sake.  There are   
   some thing that an actor will do pro bono.  Cons, starring in a low   
   budget movie/documentary, etc.   
      
   	Sure, Shatner made for the Viacom/Desilu/Parmount to the tune   
   of hundreds of millions of dollars -- but how much of that actually   
   goes to him?  Surprisingly a fraction of that profit.   
   	Something else you're missing in this is the question of "why"   
   is Shatner asking for money?  Usually when an actor is asking for   
   money for an appearance on the show -- it usually means that they   
   believe it to be a risky venture.  Or that there may be some hard   
   feelings in regards to coming back to work for them.   
      
   	So Paramount balked.  So they backed out.  Nothing wrong with   
   that -- that's just business.
