Personally I've nothing against space battles a la Nemesis. In fact, I
rather applaud that they attempted for once to do a really good one in Trek.
Unfortunately it wasn't a really good space battle. I've said this before on
this ng; nobody in Trek seems to be able to choreograph space engagements.
It's like they can't really figure out what tactics these massive starships
   will use.

It had it's moments. The ramming sequence was a nice idea and nicely
executed. Unfortunately, like the rest of the script it makes Picard look
like a fuckwit, since he seems to have given no thought to what to do
*after* he's crashed the Enterprise into Shinzon's death star.

The whole script is just full of embarrassments like that. With his ship,
his crew and the planet Earth at stake, he decides to beam over alone and
sort it out mano-a-mano for personal reasons. Then he survives at the
expense of a senior officer, having frozen when the only thing he should be
doing is shutting down the Death Ray thing. The man shows the tactical skill
of a cabbage. Then to cap it all, he loses the last credibility the
character ever has after the battle when, with his ship wrecked and no doubt
awash with casualties, and his Romulan allies in similar dire straits, he
stumps off to his ready room to deal with his issues, like a prick.

And that ignores the whole central failing of Nemesis; a misguided attempt
to create a Khan, which fails on every level.

IMO, Nemesis doesn't fail because it attempts to be spectacular (it does on
some level succeed there). It fails due to a wishy-washy villain, a poor
script, and characterisation that blows chunks clear across the room. It
certainly left me wanting never to see Picard again.
