     The Ferengi were a walking violation of canon from the start.   
   Were they anything like the Ferengi referred in Farpoint Station?   
   No.  Was their total ignorance of alien clothing customs and their   
   opening of negotiations by telling the other side they look ugly   
   consistent with supposedly being a species of professional traders?   
   No.  Was it ever established that that their first appearance in   
   TNG was the first encounter with humans?  Not really.  In fact we   
   know for a fact based on later episodes of TNG and other species   
   that Ferengi had in fact encountered humans before.  Indeed   
   the Ferengi complained about the way that humans interfered   
   with their trade practices in the name of the Prime Directive.   
   So what's the big deal?  There was no violation of canon worth   
   mentioning on that occasion.
