   I'm posting this in the thread but not in specific reply to   
   any message but just the general flintlocks discussion.   
      
   In the TNG episode Too Short a Season there was   
   a hostage incident where the then Captain   
   provided advanced weapons in exchange for hostages.   
   But he also balanced this out by giving advanced   
   weapons to the other side in the conflict.   
   The result is a long bloody civil war.   
      
   This clearly is a prime directive violation   
   because a federation captain was the only party   
   involved providing weapons - he shouldn't have traded   
   weapons for hostages in the first place.
