As much as I have a dislike for TNG(R.Berman) fans, I point them to
"Parallels" ep. for their answers, my preference for "All Good Things"
{outfitted as a real starship, re: matches FJ's & fan publ. on
Dreadnaughts, & no Children on the "E"}over the "Generations" movie(not
the prime Kirk, but the Bermanverse version).
"Relics" not the prime Scotty...in six, prime Scotty clearly said he
bought a boat, IIRC in the novelization or elsewhere prime Scotty said
he got the boat as the only boy he wanted to stay close to his sisters
and their children, after the loss of one nephew. In the making of ST
book there is a brief bio that Scotty left home at sixteen to get away
from a family of 'pestering' sisters, signing on to the first tramp
cargo ship that would take him (a little like the CGI ST:Aurora,
http://auroratrek.com/ ). Where he started gaining his miracle worker
status fixing up the old hulks he worked on before getting into
   StarFleet.
