I was one of those Trek fans from the first run of TOS in the 60s who
was outraged that anyone would dare make a new Trek show without the
original characters and actors. So I refused to watch TNG at first, until
I finally stumbled across it by accident sometime in the third or forth
season and thought, "Hey, this isn't bad!" It soon became a favorite
of mine, and even won over my wife (who never cared anything about TOS).
It wasn't until we saw the first couple of seasons on VHS that I realized
how lucky I'd been to be spared seeing it when it first aired. If I'd
tried watching it from the beginning then I'd probably never have gotten
to the good seasons before giving up on it. As it happened, seeing the
junky stuff *after* becoming a TNG fan wasn't so bad, because it was fun
to contrast the stiff, preachy tone of the characters (Picard and Troi
in particular) with the somewhat more relaxed and natural attitudes in
   the later episodes.

(It became a joke in my household, when listening to anyone who was
beginning to sound a little pompous or pretentious, for one of us to
stop in the middle of the conversation and stare off into the distance
while saying something like, "But that's why we're out here, to explore,
to learn, to improve ourselves and make the Universe a better place.
   Make it so!" :-)
