Given what an iconic piece of cinema history the original theatrical version
of ANH was, it'd be nice if a version of it could be preserved on a digital
   master for all time.

Funny thing is, I bet many people who *think* they know the original are
really remembering the altered version that went out on VHS. If the original
were ever somehow released, I wonder how many people would say "That's
wrong! There's no "Episode IV" in the crawl. Aunt Beru doesn't sound like
that!" And all those other little things that almost no one remembers
because they never had a home version of the one that monopolized theaters
for over a year back in 1977.
