Well maybe. I'm not a big Star Wars fan- haven't seen The Phantom Menace for
instance. But to me, Star Wars was a magical experience I had as an 11 year
old boy who had only up to that point seen clunky sci-fi movies with dodgy
special effects. TOS was the most advanced SFX I'd ever seen, I think. So
sitting in the ABC cinema Northampton, having queued around the block for
*ages* with my dad, watching this at that time near-miraculous spectacle is
one of those Great Personal Memories.

Of course we all got pretty jaded pretty quickly after that. The slew of
sci-fi that followed Star Wars saw to that. But that moment- seeing Star
Wars for the first time. Phenomenal. I think these things matter, in a small
   way.

I don't like some of Lucas's use of CGI. Some of it looks great. But the CGI
aliens and creatures shoved into Star Wars look fake and cartoonish; fake in
a way that the rubber mask aliens of the original don't. It's a more
different, jarring kind of fake. I can look at the muppet Yoda and suspend
belief. But the tricksy stuff going on in the background when Luke enters
Mos Eisley, for instance, it just doesn't work for me at all. As such, I
think I'd prefer to watch the original, without the updated special effects.
As I say tho, not a huge fan of Star Wars per se anyway, so it's not really
something I stay awake nights worrying about.
