Well I DO realize the whole barrier business is a fiction to give some
excuse for the mental powers in the second pilot. Every photo I've seen
of galaxies similar to ours shows plenty of variation in star density
   and indistinct "surfaces".

Between all the mass near the galactic center and relatively high
quantities of interstellar matter any type of FTL travel would be even
more of a challenge there. The only advantage would be the availability
to collect greater quantities of matter for propellant or energy production.
