    Star Trek violated previously established canon and watchers just   
   nodded and said "We have always been at war with Oceania, and genetic   
   engineering has been forbidden by  law for centuries".  But as soon as   
   a show is set in the past, suddenly "canon" becomes so much more   
   important.  Why is that?
